The everyday skin guide
A good routine doesn't have to be complicated. Begin with a few reliable essentials, then let your skin — not the latest trend — set the pace.
01
Start with the essentials
A gentle cleanser, a moisturiser and daily sun protection form a useful foundation. The best routine is one you can use consistently without leaving your skin tight, sore or uncomfortable.
In the morning, cleanse if you need to, moisturise, then apply sunscreen. In the evening, remove sunscreen and makeup with a gentle cleanser and follow with moisturiser.
02
Protect, every day
Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 50 or SPF 50+ sunscreen, follow its directions and reapply as directed, particularly after swimming, sweating or towelling. Sunscreen is only one part of sun protection: shade, clothing, a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses matter too.
In Australia, sun protection is recommended when the UV index is 3 or above. Check the local UV forecast rather than relying on temperature or how sunny it feels.
03
Introduce one change at a time
Adding several new formulas at once makes it difficult to know what suits you. Introduce one product at a time, follow its instructions and give your skin time to respond before changing anything else.
Patch testing on a small area may help identify irritation, but cannot guarantee that a product will never cause a reaction. Stop using a product if you develop irritation; seek medical advice for a persistent or significant reaction.
04
Listen to your skin
Dryness, oiliness and sensitivity can change with weather, hormones and the products you use. A lighter texture may feel better in humid weather; a richer moisturiser may suit dry conditions.
Persistent acne, eczema, rosacea or unexplained changes deserve individual advice from a qualified healthcare professional. More products and stronger actives are not always the answer.
